The Black Poplar (Populus nigra)

Not many flowers at the moment but these Black Poplar catkins are an indication of the increasing day length. These catkins are on a female tree, the male catkins are red. Pollination is by wind and once fertilised the female catkins develop into fluffy cotton-like seeds which fall in late summer.
