Alconbury Airfield

We managed to reach a milestone today. 30 years married.
After a concentrated office week of four days for me and a four day job for Callum, we decided to spend our "day off" celebrating with brunch at Alconbury Weald followed by a little nosy around the airfield.
Lunch at Bohemia was excellent. Then off we went exploring.
I had done some research beforehand and there is an abandoned Cold War Bunker on the site locally known as Magic Mountain.
The whole site is astonishing. The vastness of the area and the history behind it all.
RAF Alconbury, like many sites across East Anglia, played a central part in military operations and was an active base from 1938-1995, under the control of both British and American air forces.
There are hangars, control centres, bunkers, huts - it’s just fascinating.
The majority of the site has been acquired for redevelopment since 2009 and there is a huge housing development underway providing all the aspects of a new community.
It’s a blippers paradise. As I was with Callum, I was brave and actually got out the car and wandered into the first part of the bunker. Amazingly we didn’t get stopped or questioned, although I’m not answering the door for the next few days just in case….
Some extras worth looking at if you like this sort of thing. One showing the scale of the bunker, you can see our car as a tiny speck off to the right.
All in all a very good day.
