The butcher, the baker and the brewer..

Detail from the gravestone of William Anderson a brewer who died on 5th October 1833. The grave is in the Howff, which means ‘meeting place’. A graveyard gifted to the city of Dundee as a place of burial in 1564 by Mary Queen of Scot’s. It earned its name as it was the site of the Incorporated Trades of Dundee dealing floor from 1581 until 1776. Many of the gravestones proudly bear the symbols of the deceased’s trade. A fascinating place to explore!
