Over coffee in the Usher Hall foyer I was perusing the notices. The Bar notice on the wall includes the warning 'We will not tolerate any verbal or physical abuse toward our staff ' and I was considering why this disclaimer has become so necessary in recent times.

By contrast, the notice below, indicating the honesty box for the coffee, suggests that the audience be trusted not only to pay for their refreshments but are trustworthy enough not make a scene by abusing the staff.

We were on the bus home when we heard of the fire in the Jenners's building, my first thoughts were of sadness at the possible loss of the beautiful timber balustrade, then for the firefighters tackling what could become a dangerous event.
