108 today

Except he died when he was 73, but you never forget your dad’s birthday.
I wonder what you can see in his face? He was kind, gentle, conscientious, mild-mannered and always polite.  He managed a shop, and all the staff really liked him - well, that’s what they told me anyway.  Because he was helpful to them, and thoughtful.
But he didn’t laugh much, he didn’t talk much, he didn’t have a lot of fun. At night he would often wake up shouting or screaming. I guess today you might say he had PTSD. In the war, he became an ambulance driver because he didn’t want to kill anyone, or carry weapons. He was in some of the worst places, including the evacuation of Dunkirk, North Africa, the Salerno landings, Montecassino.  He barely talked about it. That’s the sum of what I know.
It’s shocking how few photos I have of him.  This was for some kind of official work purpose.
