Venetian Court, Capitola

I'm guessing this image may look familiar to folks who watch the news; I didn't see it myself, but I'm pretty sure these vacation homes were a backdrop for Biden's recent visit to our storm damaged area. Soquel Creek comes into the bay here; there usually is a nice broad sandy beach up against that sea wall. The fishing pier is further back on the left, and sharp eyes may detect a gap--check the Extra for a clearer view of the damage to the pilings and the road. The restaurant and the boat rental place are inaccessible.

Yes, there is enormous damage, but I was impressed at how well the cleanup has been going. I expected to see mud in the streets, but it's all pretty decent looking. The oceanfront restaurants are fenced off and under construction, but the rest of the village is up and running. There were a fair number of visitors strolling around, mostly everyone shaking their heads and mumbling, "Unbelievable," as they viewed the log-strewn beach (Extra #2).

We've been lucky to have a bright sunny week to begin to dry out. It's amazing to me how quickly business owners were able to find tradesmen and work crews and start the process of rebuilding. Capitola has always been a sweet special laid back spot that has managed to hold on to its unique character. I've got many wonderful memories of bike rides and ice cream and the Wharf to Wharf foot race; playing on the beach with kids and grandkids. It's a place you take visitors, and I'm looking forward to sharing it again soon.
