Roman Ridge - At Risk

Thank you everyone for the kind words on yesterdays rainy and 'ill-gotten' blip (get it? Ill-gotten coz I was ill yesterday, haha!) Anyway, still felling quite lousy today, can't believe I felt worse when I woke up. Nevertheless, took some tablets, and when I started feeling a bit better and rain has stopped, I sneaked out for a quick nearby shot. Ssshhh, don't tell Mr M as I'm sure to get a telling-off..

This is The Roman Ridge
-- Swinton's prehistoric monument that has survived for more than 2,000 years. The two-metre high earthwork situated in Swinton Wood is a "Scheduled Ancient Monument". The structure forms part of an ancient wall that once ran 12 miles from Wincobank to Wath-Upon-Dearne. It is thought to pre-date Roman times and marked the southern border of the territory of the ancient Brigantes, the biggest tribe in Celtic Britain who lived in what is now northern England.

It now marks the entrance to Creighton Woods which leads to footpaths where one can explore and venture into.

Unfortunately, it has now been placed on the "Risk Register" by English Heritage after bikers started digging into it to build ramps. How sad it is that some people not only take these ancient structures for granted, but also disrespect what they represent. This is a very important yet fragile monument and we are fortunate that it has survived for so long.

Right, that's it, a piece of my mind, as I am feeling the after-effects of sneaking out.. Body starting to ache again, hopefully not a rebound.. Tablets wearing off I guess.. So it's an early night for me.. Night-night everyone!
