A Light Dusting Of Snow

On This Day In History
1980: Paul McCartney is released from a Tokyo jail and deported from Japan

Quote Of The Day
"We were about to fly to Japan and I knew I wouldn't be able to get anything to smoke over there. This stuff was too good to flush down the toilet, so I thought I'd take it with me."
(Paul McCartney)

Knowing how rigorously Japan enforced its drug-smuggling laws, and also surely knowing that he would be searched after being refused a Japanese visa five years earlier following numerous arrests in Europe for drug offences, the mind simply boggles at Paul McCartney's decision to enter Narita Airport with half a pound of marijuana in his luggage. Such a large amount of marijuana, which he claimed was for his personal use, meant he faced a potential seven year prison sentence. Lucky for him, he was just sent back to England with his eleven-city Wings concert tour cancelled.

Is there one legal system for the rich and another one for the poor? Is Paul McCartney a prize pillock?
