Redevelopment
Newcastle city centre is currently undergoing major redevelopment. The façade of this building is supported by heavy scaffolding as there is nothing behind it. The building was build in the 1920's and is called Carliol House. For many years it was the headquarters of the North Eastern Electricity Board. As well as offices it housed a showroom where people would go and buy their washers, fridges, ovens, etc. The building has been empty for many years.
The façade will become part of a huge new development as HRMC are going to move 9,000 of their staff to the new offices. I guess it will bring a welcome boost to the city centre shops and businesses which have definitely taken a hit after Covid and the current financial situation.
