In the footsteps of Charles Dickens

We were busy today, attending three events all in cold venues. The main event was a blue plaque unveiling, celebrating the history of the Royal Lyceum Theatre. It was here on this very date in 1869 that Charles Dickens gave a reading on his ‘farewell tour’, and Oscar Wilde lectured in November 1883. There was a talk on ‘ Victorian Torquay’ and a musical celebration. Now it is the home of the Unleashed Theatre Company, a community drama group.
We shivered but enjoyed it. Dickens was not impressed, and called it ‘something  between a theatre, a circus, a riding school, a  Methodist chapel and a cow house’.
Difficult to photograph safely.
