Marsden remnants.
The Marsden lime kilns were built in the 1870's and lasted until 1960. They were served by a mineral line that belonged to the South Shields, Marsden and Whitburn Colliery railway and they transported the lime to South Shields. A significant number of workers were used in the mining processes here and the local train - privately owned - was known as the Marsden Rattler. By the early 60's the rolling stock was abandoned by the trackside (it lay there for many years). The Whitburn Colliery mine closed in 1968 and workers were also transported by Economic, a local bus operator based in Whitburn. I visited the Economic many times!
