Sally Mair - Loving life

By Sallymair

One week on.

We were in town early, for us this morning. We met up with some friends at the National Galleries café then went to see the Turners. It's forgotten how small most of them are and to be honest, this year, they just weren't my cup of tea. I like the Abbotsford images and those on blue paper but mostly they were disappointing. We went on up into the National Gallery and as always enjoyed wandering around. This image, 1st extra, of a girl threading a needle by Nicolaes Maes is one of my current favourites and I rather liked the new acquisition of a painting by William Dyce, of the South door and aisle of Rosslyn Chapel, extra 2, it's so alive and rather beautiful.
From the Galleries we walked round to Dishoom on St Andrew Square. On the way we passed the front of Jenners. Fencing has been put around the front and there are flowers and notes there. It didn't seem appropriate to go and read them, but I noted in my heart and felt sad. I then realised that the reason there were so many cameras around was that there was a silent group of fire fighters there, presumably come to pay tribute and to remember that exactly this time last week they were fighting the fire which killed one of their number. All i could think of was that he had left his family to go to work and didn't come home again. I touched the arm of one young man as I walked by and said thank you.
It's very unusual for me to be in town at all so very strange that I too was there on both occasions a week ago and then today.
We had a good lunch then four of us went back on the 41 bus to our homes, while our visitor went back to St Michael's in Fife.
Back home I finally got around to compising and submitting my letter of objection to the council about the fa̶i̶t̶ ̶a̶c̶c̶o̶m̶p̶l̶i̶ proposed and unnecessary extension to bus lane operating hours near us. We have till the end of May to object so I wanted to make sure I did it.
We were at bridge this evening and were very surprised to find we had won again. If only we could work out what we are doing right!
Thank you all for your comments, I do appreciate them.
