Poland

This is the Monument to the fallen and murdered in the east in Warsaw. It commemorates the victims of the Soviet invasion of Poland during World War II and subsequent repressions. There is more about the monument on Wikipedia.

The shot was taken by ceridwen - thank you! We have posted it here to represent Poland in our online photo album of locations mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal, and available as a podcast series). Thank you ceridwen for this contribution.

Lorna mentions Poland several times in her war diary, especially in the early entries covered in Episode 1 and Episode 2 of our podcast series. These include an entry on September 17th 1939 in which Lorna comments on the Soviet invasion that is referenced by this monument.

Later, on January 29th 1940, Lorna writes about the murder of 18,000 influential Polish Jews by the Gestapo and German soldiers. She then considers the fate of members of her own circle (including herself) if such an exercise were carried out following a German invasion of Britain.

This is the last of the photographs that we have held in our pipeline for our journal. We don't know when we will next be able to post a picture. This depends on the receipt of photographs from friendly blippers to represent the locations that remain on our list below. Do you think that you could help out, please?

If you have a suitable shot - either of a place(s), or something that could represent it (them) - please send your contribution(s) (not previously blipped) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk to feature alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022. As soon as we receive your picture(s), we'll remove the location(s) from the list. Thank you!
