Life in a Northern Town

Closer To The Edge

This is the view over Longwood and Milnsbridge from Longwood Edge. It is a place I have seen from a distance for the whole 25 years I have lived in Huddersfield, but today was the first time I actually walked there. Dogs are good for the mind, the body and the soul!

The village of Longwood was once a thriving hub of industry, full of woollen mills - these have now been converted to or replaced by housing. There are reservoirs on the hill overlooking Lockwood - one is called a compensation reservoir, named because mill owners were compensated for the loss of natural water to the main reservoirs, which had to be paid for by rates. The same mill owners probably owned the reservoirs too so it was win win.

Meanwhile in 1861, unemployed mill workers built a folly on the Edge called Nab End Tower - it's not the prettiest building on a very grey day so I will save that for another day! For the last 139 years the villagers of Lockwood have gathered on the Edge to host the annual Longwood Sing with choirs and brass bands.

Lizzie dog was more relaxed today and almost befriended a poodle. Almost. Here she is in her girly pink coat. She is now comatose after an hour long walk.

Time for a Friday song and this is absolutely the best song from the last 5 years - if you don't know it, give it a listen - Closer To The Edge - makes me jump about like a mad woman.
