Stellar Day
After my meh day yesterday, we determined something fun and adventurous was needed today, not the same ol’ routine • Today was the day for hunting the Stellar’s Sea Eagle!! • We traveled southeast for an hour, just outside of Woolwich near Georgetown, Maine, and found the Back River Bridge. About 40-50 Birders and Photographers had already gathered. Pulling the car off of the road into the icy snow we walked a quarter mile or so to the bridge, asking others along the way if the eagle was here. Our pace quickened after the first resounding YES!! Big smiles were all around as eagle seekers collectively shivered in the cold for a glimpse of this rare visitor to Maine • He made his first appearance last year in almost the same spot causing quite a stir since they typically live in Russia, China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan • He soon left Maine flying north to Canada, being spotted in Brunswick, Quebec and Nova Scotia • This year he was last seen in Newfoundland before perching near the Back River in Maine last week • Today he was out of reach for my lens, nor did I have a tripod, but I did get an image! He was barely visible with the naked eye but generous and kind strangers allowed us a view through their tripod mounted scopes and cameras. We literally gasped when seeing him for the first time • An amazing experience that flipped Monday’s meh into a resounding WOW Tuesday!
