tempus fugit

Gendered

On the left the male catkins, well past their pollinating peak, on the right the tiny red tassel of the newly unfurled female  hazel flower.
The staggered timing means that the female flower has a better chance of being fertilised by pollen from another tree's later flowering male catkins. See here for explanation.

Purely by coincidence (and in any case with only the most tenuous connection to the above) I've  just been watching a remarkable documentary film about self-identified transvestites who sought each other out in the days when cross-dressing was unmentionable. Called Casa Susanna, it reunites two now-elderly members of a secret retreat where men could dress as women, feel comfortable with themselves  and enjoy the company of others who shared their desire free from social disapprobation. We meet two of them (both went on to transition fully) and the daughter of another.

It's warm, revealing, tender and ultimately affirmative account of the struggle to be oneself in a less accepting time. Strongly recommended.
It's available on the BBC Storyville and elsewhere.
