Peas in a pod?

I was at a conference at Strathclyde University today. The buildings are mostly built in the past 40 years and can be pretty ugly, inside and out. But if you look closely sometimes there are features that surprise you. This is on the wall of the first flight of stairs in the McCance building. Perhaps it's a way of trying to add detail to a pretty featureless building. It's not very obvious though.
