A retrospective day. MrsW found my dad's old wine glass. The chip on the rim makes it useless to drink from but we cannot bring ourselves to throw it out.
My dad joined the army in 1930 simply because he was a working class lad who couldn't find any other work. He was a soldier until 1955 when he left the army and joined the Peace Pledge Union, often seen on "Ban the bomb" marches.
It wasn't the army that educated him but his experiences in it certainly did. He spent many years serving in India and the Middle East and returned to England with a great respect for the various various cultures he encountered. He read a lot and widely always wanting to learn more right up until his death in 1992. In his later years he would spend his evenings at the kitchen table with a glass of wine, his cat and a book. The book illustrated is one of his favourites The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.
