Under a Spreading Chestnut Tree...
...The village smithy stands;
The smith, a mighty man is he,
With large and sinewy hands;
And the muscles of his brawny arms
Are strong as iron bands.
(Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1807-1882, The Village Blacksmith)
There's no chestnut tree, and the young smith doesn't have large and sinewy hands, but this is a smithy, albeit a temporary one at the Bellingham Technical College Welding Rodeo.
This annual two-day event features a welded sculpture competition for teams (by invitation only). Completed sculptures are auctioned to raise funds for the college. There's also a welding skills challenge contest for individuals.
