Tuesday: Candlelit Dinner - Not For Valentine’s
I am surprised at how much religion features in everyday life here. Last night and this morning I was at events marking the opening of a banking institute here in Belize. And both events were opened with prayers, which is quite a common occurrence. As an atheist, I struggle with this, particularly as it’s evident how much the evangelical churches hold back social progress here.
I had a variety of meetings in Belize City today, including a rather odd lunch where the venue decided it was going to hammer the Valentine’s theme even though everyone was evidently there for a business lunch. It was hard to have a business discussion shouting over the singer warbling romantic tunes.
K cooked up a lovely dinner tonight. Neither of us buy into Valentine’s Day. It’s a purely commercial construct designed to extract money, when every day should be a show of love and respect. But we still had a nice candlelit dinner just because.
I’m sounding positively churlish tonight!
