A week or so ago, I received a letter from our bank asking that we close our safe deposit box. We've had that box for years, and almost completely forgotten what had been placed there. Today, I went in to close it out and return the keys. It seems that the landlord - Harvard University - wants to repurpose the basement of the building, and the safe deposit has to go.
I brought the goodies home, and rediscovered a little box containing two substantial silver medals awarded to my late father by the British Government in the years following WW2, for his service.
Dad had gone to the U.K. in the late 1930s to specialize as a radiologist at Cambridge. He finished his residency, and was employed in Southampton when the war broke out. Rather than returning to his native South Africa to sign up, he enlisted in Britain and was drafted to the Royal Army Medical Corps. Some years ago, I Blipped the R.A.M.C insigne which I still have from his uniform. During the course of the war, he rose to the rank of Major, and I Blipped one of his Crowns previously.
The two medals with their ribbons, and the little chart explaining the different medals awarded for service to Britain in the different theaters of the war, complete this set of artifacts. There are fascinating articles on Wikipedia about these medals here and here. They were awarded to those who served from the British Commonwealth.
