Watch out for bears!

Seeing that it was another grey day, I had the forethought to take a photo for my blip when I went to the village shop in the morning. This view features the corner of the Bellachroy Hotel, reputedly the oldest inn on the island having been founded in 1608, although I think it would have looked quite a bit different in the 17th century compared to the 21st century.
The public bar in the hotel is called “The Bear Pit” because folk from the village have, for many years, been called Dervaig Bears. This nickname goes way back, more than a hundred years ago, when a travelling entertainer came from Germany and brought a dancing bear to the village. However, he wasn’t well paid for his show and he was overheard to have made the cynical comment, “There must be plenty of bears in Dervaig!”
