Flower Friday (17th February 2023)

Things are starting to wake up, and in the porch the first two dwarf irises, planted last autumn, have appeared (Iris histroides 'George').

With thanks to BikerBear for Flower Friday.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Leslie Winer and Maxwell Sterling - Once I Was (2022)
This was another find I made via one of Radio Three's sleep-depriving series', Late Junction, which finishes at 0100 hr. Last Friday's show was entitled Shelf Life and celebrated the excellent Jennifer Lucy Allan's recently completed indexing of her record collection, which is no ordinary record collection revelling as it does in spoken word, found sounds and sound effects. The fact that she has a PhD in foghorns tells one much about her approach, and also that she is a collaborator on the magazine The Wire.
This is one of her choices, a version of Tim Buckley's song Once I Was, from his album Goodbye And Hello, which I heard in early 1968 when I found it on the B-side of his sublime Elektra single Morning Glory, though this version appears to be sourced from an earlier acoustic version. These days he is remembered more for being the father of Jeff Buckley than for his own musical brilliance.
Leslie Winer was initially a model who at one time lived with William Burroughs and transcribed his poetry. She made an album called Witch in 1990 in London, which I bought on CD at the time of its release, but I was unaware that she was still active musically.
"The latest installment of Light in the Attic’s exclusive vinyl and digital singles series features musician, poet, and author Leslie Winer collaborating with Manchester-born composer Maxwell Sterling on a truly gorgeous cover of Tim Buckley’s 1967 forlorn love song Once I Was. Buckley’s original classic is found on the flip-side and initially taken from the release Lady, Give Me Your Key: The Unissued 1967 Solo Acoustic Sessions."  - Light In The Attic, 2022.
