Hanging on...
It was almost midnight by the time we completed the newt survey last night and worked our way back to the road through two miles of pathless woodland. Although I know the woods very well its a completely different matter in the dark. The survey was reasonably successful with well over a hundred newts seen, mostly palmate but plenty of GCNs as well. Also found plenty of dragonfly larvae and damelfly exuvia on the reeds.
