Carnival has started...
Carnival is originally a Christianized pagan folk festival. It falls within the Christian tradition on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday immediately preceding the 40-day Lent.[1] In the Netherlands it is originally only celebrated by Catholics, mainly in the south and parts of the east. Carnival is also celebrated exuberantly in Belgium and the Catholic Rhineland in Germany. Carnival is pre-eminently the party of folly, mockery and exuberance. It is now customary in various places in the Netherlands to open Carnival on Carnival Friday.
Carnival concludes on Ash Wednesday, but traditions vary by region. In Limburg, carnival is also called Vastelaovend, named after the evening before the start of Lent. The Limburg carnival is more related to the Venetian carnival. In the vast majority of North Brabant, sausage bread is concluded, coffee Schrobbelèr sometimes with a Brabant coffee table. In the regions of Bergen op Zoom and Woudrichem, where fisheries are still located, more fish products are naturally eaten.
