Sgwarnog: In the Field

Crest

The late afternoon light was capturing the crest of the former Baildon Urban District Council nicely so I thought it worth capturing for posterity, not least because the building it’s attached to will be demolished as soon as the resident bat has moved out. (In context). Hopefully this crest will be saved and displayed elsewhere. Any coat of arms capped by a Lapwing gets extra points.

Translated, the motto reads: “Let us arise with vigour.”  The official heraldic reading (via civicheraldry.co.uk) is:  “The green field and golden fleece allude to the rearing of sheep for wool on the Baildon moorlands…The three chevronels point to the fact that the town [was] a three-tier town. The skylark with a sprig of gorse in its beak alludes to the moors in and surrounding Baildon.”

I was returning from having been to watch Bradford City Women beat visiting Chorley 2-1 over at Eccleshill United’s ground. The teams are now level on points in the bottom three of the Women’s National League D1 North (tier 4 of women’s football.) And yes, having been cheering the Chorley men’s team on yesterday for familial reasons, my allegiances switched straight back to Bradford for this game.
