There are very few sources of nectar for insects so early in the season but this fragrant Winter honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima) was buzzing with at least a dozen bees.  There are several bee hives at the Bee Academy in the grounds of Newbattle Abbey, where beekeepers can get training and advice, so it is only a couple of minutes flight for hungry bees to find sustenance at this shrub. They could also possibly have visited snowdrops which were growing beside the nearby river but the displays of snowdrops are not as vast as those we saw in Dalkeith Park with Flumgummery and her husband in the afternoon.
