Cross stitch

I was given this bookmark cross stitch kit for my birthday - a lovely present but I’ve not done cross stitch since I was a child and this looks really complicated! It’s not very large and I’m sure I can manage it, I just need to make a start. Just not sure quite where to start! Luckily I have a friend who does a lot of cross stitch so I can ask her for some advice.
