Into White . . .Cat Stevens
This morning the forester put his head into the tent and told me a white heron was in the estuary. I put my hoodie over my nightie and walked over to take take pictures as any good woman blipper would. It was wading across the water and then suddenly flapped into flight. For such a big bird it was rather quick. I was happy to get some shots of it flying and the morning light on it was lovely. The world wide web tells me the population of White Heron in New Zealand is around 150, to see one of these birds is a rare and special sight. The Kotuku or White Heron is considered a very rare and sacred bird in New Zealand. In Maori oratory to see one of these birds just once in a lifetime was believed to be good fortune. It's presumed the first White Herons were windblown across the Tasman Sea from Australia.
The weather forecast was for continued rain and perhaps showers so we decided to pull up our tent pegs early and come home. A good choice as it turned out as there was a temperate drop in the evening. I am a fair weather camper.
