Sonic Reed Beds by Kathy Hinde

Another of the free offerings from Norfolk and Norwich Festival. 'Sonic Reed Beds' is just one of about half a dozen wind-driven musical installations / sculptures that are on display in Earlham Park, about a ten minute bike ride from where I live.

Each of the sculptures produce different sounds which are produced from the effect of the wind on them. They are all quite different, and all quite beautiful in their own ways.

This is my favourite and comprises, I think, four different reed sculptures which re-imagine the natural reed using sprung steel topped with metal or stone. As they move in the breeze the tops collide and create random compositions of varying densities from the quiet collisions of beach pebbles to the bell-like chimes of metal domes. These sounds, combined with the way the reeds gently sway in the breeze was quite hypnotic.

It was a lovely way to spend the morning of my birthday. The remainder of the day will be spent at home with Roland, enjoying the warm weather and a rather nice supper with a bottle of wine that was a gift from my colleagues.

Check out my Look,See,Click Photography page on Facebook to see more photos of the 'Audible Forces' installations.

ps: For those of you who are interested in how the IDAHO day event in Kenya went, they have posted some photos on Facebook and it looks like they had a wonderful time.
