Kennedy's Statue

Jen had a great suggestion to make a series for the pictures I take on our walks through Kelvingrove Park on Sundays. I've already done one of the Grey Heron in the duck pond. There are so many things to take pictures of so I think it will be a long running series!

Today is one of the many statues in the park. This depicts a Bengal Tigress with a peacock in its mouth. It was presented to the city by John S. Kennedy, who was born in Glasgow in 1830, moved to America when he was 20 years old and became a financier and philanthropist.

Whilst on his Grand Tour of Europe Kennedy in 1867 he admired the work by Auguste Nicolas Cain in Paris and he commissioned a copy for Glasgow.

The original structure remains in Paris. Another copy of this sculpture, restored in 2000, is on display in Central Park Zoo in New York.
