Goose grass/cleavers

Before modern transport geese had to be herded to market over quite long distances. At this time of year there was little fresh greenery to sustain them so they lost weight on the journey. Goose grass was one of the first plants to grow in spring and was eagerly sought. The geese often wore leather shoes to protect their feet on the rough roads.
