Goosanders #31
It was a lot colder than I expected this morning at only 5 degrees and a chilly wind. But we wrapped up warm and had a good couple of hours at Pennington Flash. The new cafe is still not quite open, but surely it can't be long now - all the menus, signage, till and furniture are in place now. The carpark has been resurfaced and there are new barriers and carparking meters being installed with the price increasing from £1.50 to £2.50 per day. I guess they have to find some way of paying for the cafe and carpark improvements. I'd rather them fix the ramp to the closed hide(that's been like that for months), repair some of the footpaths so access is better for wheelchair users and do some environment management for the birds instead.
The goosanders were asleep on the island when we arrived at the Teal Hide. Eventually they woke up, slipped into the water one by one, but then something must have spooked them as they took to the air and flew off.
We moved on to the Bunting hide which had most of the usual woodland birds and then a sparrowhawk flew in just missing a bullfinch, landed in the ivy right next to the hide window and then flew off. See extras for a shot of his few seconds in the ivy.
