White butterbur

I stopped to photograph what appeared to be a small roadside patch of white butterbur. However. I was astonished by the extent of the colony. Under the trees in the Den of Boyndlie the wet ground was crowded with thousands of butterbur flowers.The leaves are just starting to appear as the flowers begin to fade. The huge leaves were used to wrap butter - hence the name. Petasites album, also known as Wild Rhubarb for the shape of the leaves, is an introduced species from mainland Europe which forms extensive colonies in damp places. Here it was growing alongside wild garlic, lesser celandine, and snowdrops.
