Digging Out

The morning after the night before...yikes! The wind had died and the snow was no longer blowing, but had settled down into comfortable blankets and drifts..one of which was in my driveway!  Beautiful to look at but...

It was a day of digging out..driveways, cars, doorways, sidewalks. My side door was totally blocked by a big snow drift against it...and I had to dig the snow away from the shed doors in order to get to the birdseed..which was a priority of course... Those poor birds..They were out en masse in search of food once the wind died down..and the cupboard was bare...It meant wading in snow more than shin-deep for me to get to the feeders, but it sure made those birds happy.

While birds abounded, squirrels were nowhere to be found...snow too deep for them to get around I guess? They are usually at the patio door waiting for morning treats, but not today! Smart little devils - they know when it is time to just hunker down...

My snow removal team - Cathy and Gary, former neighbours who both grew up on our street and ended up getting married and now come  back to mow lawns and clear snow for us old folks who are still here -  didn't show up all day... so some of us were snowbound for the day.

It was that old game of Outwitting the Plough...There was no point clearing the driveway until the plough went by and dropped a whole new heap of snow at the bottom of it! But..this time, it was a long wait and in the end, our street never did get ploughed. Apparently, the ploughs had been out all night clearing the main roads and the drivers, like pilots, have to have rest time before they can be called out again and as there is not a back-up group of drivers to take their place, road clearance for some of us would just have to wait... So with darkness setting in, Cathy and Gary showed up and did the job anyway. Tomorrow will require some after-the-plough digging, so I sure hope they can come back!

The day turned out to be unexpectedly mild and even pleasant if you were not one who had to shovel! Snow Days are often a good thing - a chance to just relax and not be bound by schedules, appointments, errands and such..but I still hope this will be the last one for this season. Let's get on with spring....
