Life in a Northern Town

Huddersfield A-Z: Castle Hill

Who do I complain to about the BLOODY WEATHER? Today brought the blandest sky in the whole history of skies. I was not impressed. Hence you get a mono shot today.

Castle Hill dominates the Huddersfield landscape - I previously Blipped the view of the hill from the town, and also the view of the town from the hill, so today it was supposed to be a view of the hill from the hill. But the sky was rubbish so here's the view from the bottom of the tower.

The hill itself has been settled for over 4000 years, and it is a site of great historical interest as it housed an iron age fort. Due to the flat top of the hill it has been used as a meeting place over the years - the Chartists held rallies there, during the weavers strike of 1883 there was a large gathering on the hill to hear speeches, and it has been used for cock-fighting, dog fighting and the human kind of bare-knuckle prize fighting.

The tower was built to mark Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee at a cost of £3298; the top of the tower is 1000 feet above sea level. Other than a beacon, there is nothing else on the hill as the pub was pulled down and they have been arguing for about ten years about what to replace it with.

Song - I could go for the very classy Kate Bush, or I could go for this. I seem to have made my choice!!

PS - does anyone know what the little blobs are - they appear whatever lens I use.
