TANGLED ABSTRACT FOUNTAIN
“Oh what a tangled web we weave
when first we practice to deceive!”
This well known aphorism about the
perils of lying, is often
attributed to Shakespeare; but
it was Sir Walter Scott, the prolific
poet & novelist who included it in his
verse tale,
MARMION: A Tale of Flodden Field
This Scottish author wrote many novels, of which, IVANHOE is maybe the most well known. For a variety of reasons, he is
not very popular, anymore. Maybe a swashbuckling movie would change that.
He did NOT write:
“He’s a lying, cheating snake in the grass.”
Here are a few pithy sayings he did write:
“look back & smile on perils past.”
“…the will to do, the soul to dare.”
“and come he slow
or come he fast
it is but death
who comes at last.”
This fountain, in my Blip, sent me
wandering down this literary path.
