Choir stalls
Choir stalls now empty,
Yet within the vaulted hall,
The air vibrates still
Back blip:
Last day of our short Winchester trip. We went to the Watercress festival in Arlesford in the morning, then into Winchester in the afternoon to catch Choral Evensong. Not that either of us are religious, but just love to hear the beautiful singing.
As it happened it was a special Mayoral evensong to celebrate the new Mayor, so there was a lot of pomp and ceremony, big hats and fine cloaks. Sadly we weren't allowed to take photos ...
After the service we had a brief time to wander the Cathedral. It was very special walking through the choir stalls with the ancient wood carvings. Such a history in this place - a place of worship on this site since the 7th century. King Cnut (yes spellchecker , that is correct) is buried here. A Norman cathedral was consecrated in 1093, the remains of which are still part of todays building. All a bit mind-boggling ... more history here if interested.
As I said - not religious, but I do feel that such ancient buildings have a spiritual presence and stillness we can feel within them. This sense of connection is enhanced by sublime choral singing filling the void as it always has done....
Sadly we had to cut our trip short as I had a phone call from my Dads home to say he was unwell. At 92, that is potentially serious so we packed up the caravan and headed home. He is a little better today, thank goodness.
