Rising damp

A cold day today with some heavy snow showers.  This afternoon there was a strange atmospheric effect in the bay as viewed from our front door.  During a sunny interval there appeared to be vertical columns of mist rising from the sand banks near the little island.  It gave the appearance of smouldering ashes.
