What I learnt
Day 1 of the Nature Workshop with JohnGravett, and we travelled to Rydal for bluebells and a lakeside session.
During the introduction last night John asked us to try Photo Stacking - the technique of taking multiple close ups of a subject changing the focus slightly each time. This technique allows one to achieve a sufficient DOF to render the whole subject in focus, while still retaining the blurred background. The photos are stacked using specialist software (or photoshop CS versions) to create the final image - I used a freeware package called CombineZP.
Previous attempts at this have failed miserably, but this one worked reasonably well - apparently I needed to crop in (now done) and could have taken smaller focus change steps (this one had 8 separate images).
