Fish Face

DDW's May Challenge: Self portrait

It's been a very nice relaxing day, spent hanging out with Erica and a few other friends. We had lunch at our usual Monday place, then went to uni for some 'here's where I spend most of my life' kinda touring. Our only plans for the day were to go to Jamie's Italian for dinner and Star Trek Into Darkness after that.

Dinner was delicious. I had squid ink pasta with scallops and other bits of tasty, and Erica had something with salmon. We both finished up by regressing to our childhoods and having (fancy) ice cream and jelly for dessert. We both really enjoyed it, thought the food was really nice, and liked the atmosphere of the restaurant, but I can imagine how it might not be to everyone's taste. The upstairs has a classy cafeteria feel, which is very comfortable for jeans and backpacks, or (I reckon) for a lone travelling diner with a book. But perhaps not if you're looking for a beautiful evening out. We both also admired the loos, with ye olde toilets and sinks, and some serious wall tiles going on. So fun, funky, and all round reasonable for an audience like us.

The movie was such fun! Lots of big explosions and witty lines, and (for the first time in a long time) some genuine anxiety about the peril the heroes faced - we knew they would get out, but just how was really a little worrying! We saw it in 2D, and I imagine 3D would genuinely make me sick - it's all very flash bang, but it was totally worth the full evening price of a ticket. Lydia came with us and revealed that she's been watching Star Trek since she was a kid, and she also really enjoyed the movie, so I'd say they've done a really good job of balancing the entertainment for the two different audiences - with in-jokes for those who know, but nothing that clouds the plot.

Great day, now I'm pretty tired after all the good food and company. Thanks guys!
