Magnificent Staithes ….
At one time the largest fishing port in the North East, with more than 1000 resident fishermen. Birthplace to the famous grocer’s apprentice, Captain James Cook, who went on to be one of our most famous explorers (… plenty of questions about enabling colonialism alongside scientific and geographical advancement). Home to the incredible RNLI Staithes & Runswick Lifeboat, saving lives for the last 150 years (the launch boards are an amazing record of heroic social history). Home to the amazing Staithes Story Museum, one man’s collection of maritime, village and local history, gifted for our benefit (well worth reading every scrap of information - wonderful!)

The village clings to the cliffs with houses nestling for space. It’s also home to the narrowest street in Yorkshire - so narrow it’s a squeeze to navigate. The harbour, beach, cliffs, cobbled streets, boats, cottages & views are wonderful, especially viewed from the Cleveland Way, high above the village.
