Maginot Line (Metz)

iaint has once again mined his photo archive to surface a picture for our blipper-sourced online photo album of places mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal, and now available as a podcast series).

iaint took this shot of the main railway station in Metz in 1965 with his Kodak Brownie while visiting the city on a school exchange trip. The Gare de Metz  was built between 1905 and 1908 (while the city was part of Germany). For our purposes here, the picture represents the Maginot Line. Here is some additional information provided by iaint:

'The Maginot Line was a line of defensive fortifications constructed by France in the 1930s along its borders with Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Luxembourg and Belgium. It was intended to deter German invasion, or force Germany to attack in places of France’s choosing where the Line had not been built.

The area around Metz, in Lorraine, was expected to be a German target because Alsace and Lorraine had been part of Germany between 1871 and 1918. It reverted to France by virtue of the Treaty of Versailles after World War I.

Metz gave its name to one section of the Line - Région Fortifiée de Metz.

In 1940 Nazi German forces circumvented the Line by attacking France through Belgium and Luxembourg, violating their neutrality.

Ironically, the World War II Battle of Metz took place in 1944 as Allied forces moved east through France after the Normandy landings earlier in the year.'

Lorna records the breaching of the Maginot Line in 1940 (as noted by iaint above) in her war diary entry of May 23rd 1940. This features in Episode 6 of the podcast series. (This is the same date that her father returns exhausted from active service 'under sealed orders' in France.)

Once again we have run out of photos for this journal. Can you help out with the challenge of posting a shot for every location in the list below? We are happy to take pictures either of a place(s), or something that could represent it (them)?  If so, please send your contribution(s) (not previously blipped) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk to feature alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022. Thank you!
