Kaninger Mühlenweg - after the second storm!

The Kaniger Mühlenweg is a valley that at one time housed 22 mills. 6 had been maintained in working order, complete with a bakery and various other attractions to tell the story of the old mills and the life here. An excellent footpath took you several kilometres up the river past all the mills across a bridge and back down again.

An army of volunteers put the Kaniger Mühlenweg back together after the storm in 2020 that washed huge quantities of rocks and till down the river from the Langalm and took down many trees, but only weeks after it opened again in 2022, an even bigger storm destroyed everything but 3 of the mills and huge numbers of trees. After repairing the roads, the bulldozers have been in to dig out the trail, shore up the riverbanks and what can be saved of the buildings has been stacked up, but there is a whole lot more to do.

I guess one reason these mills were built as simple wooden cabins next to the mountain streams is precisely because of this. Careful siting and a good deal of luck are the only things that ensure the longevity of any of them.
