Today, the fourth Sunday in Lent, is Mothering Sunday when traditionally people would return to their mother church where they were baptised if possible and those who were working as domestic servants were given the day off to visit their mothers.  Now it ls generally known as Mothers’ Day and become very commercialised.   While mothers are remembered it is also a time when those women who have had no children for whatever reason, can be remembered for the motherly care that they have shown to others.  This ornament reminds me too of those who have lost a child and I think of the many children who no longer have a mother to give them a hug.
