The Sebastapol Cannon
After the Crimean War , Russian guns were brought back as souvenirs to the UK .This one was claimed by Retford who had provided many soldiers. It was placed here as a memorial but when the second world war broke out it was commandeered for smelting into iron , in common with church railings , iron gates and road signs .
Luckily Retford had a councillor who was having none of this and he commandeered it back into the stewardship if the town before it was lost forever .
It stands in Cannon Square which must have been renamed in it's honour .
