Bombing the admiral
Frame made for Admiral Edward Russell (1653-1727) to celebrate his appointment as Admiral of the Fleet and First lord of the Admiralty. It probably originally held his portrait instead of a mirror. The frame is decorated with symbols representing eternal glory. The photographer is desperately hoping some eternal glory will rub off with a quick selfie (though hopefully not the pomposity).
At the Fitzwilliam Museum to see the Islanders exhibition featuring antiquities from Cyprus, Crete and Sardinia which is well worth seeing.
The extra shows a Cypriot jug c.750 - 600 BCE. I can feel the potter's fingers squeezing that top into a spout, it's what makes clay so special.
