Spring migrants and flowers
This morning we drove to the nearby village of Shawford to investigate the state of a footpath in in readiness for a walk Martin is leading tomorrow. We walked along the path by the Itchen Navigation towards Winchester. It was muddy, but not impassable. We saw a number of little warblers (probably Chiffchaffs as we heard them calling)flitting over the water, picking off insects, and also one Swallow. As we approached the bridge where the M3 motorway crosses the waterway, we noticed a large, pale coloured, bird sitting on a post. Soon, it flew off away from us,towards the water meadows, and our suspicions were confirmed- it was an Osprey! They are returning now to the UK ,from West Africa, and stop off at bodies of water to refuel before heading to their breeding grounds, further north.
This photo is of the trough I planted last autumn after my sweet peas had finished flowering in it.
