Gundagai

We’re on our way to Sorrento in Victoria for a few days.
En route, Gundagai is a small country town about half way between Sydney and Melbourne notable for floods and historic bridges.
It’s about the most flood prone town in Australia with the 1852 flood remaining the nation’s worst natural disaster (78 killed) for >150 years, eclipsed by the Victorian bushfires in 2009. This was followed by an even bigger flood in 1853 so the town was moved up the hill from the flood plain as seen in the extra.
The railway and road bridges across the flood plain were both about 900m long, were both timber and met at the northern end. The road bridge has largely been dismantled but the railway viaduct in the blip, the longest timber truss ever built in Oz, is disused but still standing and heritage listed. The replacement road bridge is only 5m shorter than the SHB but considerably less impressive!!
I remember how exciting it was for a young boy in the 1950s crossing the old bridge in the family car.
Staying in Wangaratta tonight and hopefully we can skirt around Melbourne tomorrow (I’m not a fan)!
