About Turn!

Several weeks before our Iceland trip we began monitoring road conditions. The roads authority have a website where you can check every road to see temperatures, wind speeds, number of cars passing and its status, such as closed, impassable, slippery, blowing snow,,, etc etc. We are travelling around one road, and have seen it before and during our trip being closed due to strong gales and snow.

Anyways, yesterday we received warnings our route for the next 2 days could be closed, and sure enough, they were closed due to risk of avalanche over a few hundred km. Our hotel tonight already suggested we cancel, so we had to make the call to remain put, or about turn and go clockwise round the loop. We had already booked somewhere on Friday night for 3 nights, so we didn’t want to miss that, so about turn we did, which took all day, and night.

On our way, the route we had already travelled, we stopped at a tongue of the Vatnajokull Glacier, the 2nd largest in Europe. We had not seen this on our first pass, but from a distance it looked stunning, with a lake in front of it.

Onwards and I stopped to take a photo of some horses on the sea front, they always looks so cold, with their rears to the wind. Then some old houses built into the rocks, pretty much to take shelter. Further stops were only to fill out tummies, fill the petrol tank several times. Tomorrow we will take it easyish!

Extras added as usual.
